Town News: Mandatory Evacuation Being Considered

Town of Holden Beach News
Hurricane Irene (Thursday PM Update)

Irene continues to cause uncertainty in our planning. There is a good possibility strong consideration will be given to a mandatory evacuation on Friday, August 26, 2011. It is expected if this decision is made that the evacuation will require evacuees to be off the island by the end of the day or sooner as weather conditions are expected to deteriorate as sunset approaches Friday evening. The worst weather is expected to be Friday night through Saturday night, which may cause the bridge, utilities and emergency services to be unavailable for the entire period.

  • iF MANDITORY EVACUATION,WILL IT BE DIFFICULT TO GET BACK ON THE ISLAND LATER IN THE WEEK?

  • Katie,

No, not really. There’s usually a period where town officials drive the beach and assess damage and make sure everything is safe for everyone to return. We would expect it to reopen rather promptly after the storm settles down.
